The Holiday Season: Difficulties and Pleasures

The holiday season often brings with it significant financial impacts as people engage in spending, traveling, and various additional expenses. With gift exchanges, decorations, and festive activities, spending can quickly add up, straining budgets. Travel costs, whether for visiting family or taking a holiday getaway, can be substantial, encompassing airfare, accommodations, and dining out. Additionally, hosting events or attending parties can lead to expenses related to food, drinks, and entertainment. All these financial demands can place pressure on individuals and families, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful budgeting and planning during the festive season to avoid post-holiday financial stress.

Planning

A well-structured budget helps individuals set limits and allocate resources wisely, preventing excessive debt and stress in the new year. Creating a holiday budget can involve setting specific spending limits for gifts, decorations, travel, and entertainment. To delve deeper into this topic and gather valuable tips on effective holiday budgeting, I recommend reading the article “How to Create a Holiday Budget and Stick to It” on The Balance. This article provides practical advice and strategies for managing your finances during the holiday season, making it easier to enjoy the festivities without breaking the bank.

The Struggle

The biggest financial struggle for most people during the holiday season is overspending. Many individuals tend to get caught up in the spirit of giving and celebration, leading them to spend beyond their means on gifts, travel, decorations, and entertaining. The pressure to buy extravagant presents and create a memorable holiday experience can result in credit card debt and financial stress in the aftermath of the season. Managing and sticking to a budget can be challenging, especially when faced with the temptation of sales and promotions, making overspending a common financial challenge during the holidays.

Smart Travel Saving

When it comes to saving on holiday travel costs, a few strategic tips can make all the difference. First, consider flexible travel dates to secure more affordable flights and accommodations. Additionally, booking your tickets in advance can often lead to significant savings. Be sure to compare prices across different airlines and travel websites, as deals may vary. Another valuable tip is to sign up for fare alerts and loyalty programs to stay updated on discounts and earn rewards.

Ben Martinek, CFP®, EA, CSLP®, RICP®, is the founder and lead advisor at Bona Fide Finance, an independent, fee-only firm dedicated to helping doctors, young professionals, and growing families take control of their financial future. With a deep understanding of student loan debt—having tackled his own—Ben specializes in guiding clients through debt repayment strategies, smart investing, and comprehensive financial planning so they can build wealth with confidence. Ben’s passion for financial planning comes from his desire to provide honest, objective advice tailored to each client’s unique situation. He loves seeing the impact of his work, whether it’s helping a family pay off student loans years ahead of schedule, setting up an early retiree for financial freedom, or giving clients the peace that comes from knowing their finances are in order. His clients appreciate his thoughtful, high-touch approach, often saying that working with him has changed their lives.

Before launching Bona Fide Finance in 2015, Ben’s career path was anything but conventional. The fourth of nine children, he grew up in rural Indiana and initially pursued a path in academia, earning a B.A. in philosophy and classical languages, followed by a master’s degree in philosophy. Along the way, he explored careers in construction and truck driving—logging over 600,000 miles across the U.S. with his wife, Deb—before finding his true calling in financial planning.

Now based in Bismarck, North Dakota, Ben and Deb stay busy raising their two daughters, Edith and Virginia. Since their truck-driving days, Ben is happiest on a long road trip—preferably behind the wheel of his TDI Volkswagen Jetta. He enjoys sailing on Lake Sakakawea, camping in their vintage ’90s pop-up camper, and smoking a pipe by the grill. A lover of strategy board games, he favors Clans of Caledonia (mostly because Deb refuses to play Risk with him). When he’s not working with clients, he can be found smoking meat, gardening, hiking, or diving into The Lord of the Rings or Dune. Ben also serves on the school board for his daughters’ Montessori school and is actively involved in pre-marriage ministry in the Bismarck Diocese.
